Students from the Center for Global Studies (CGS) of Norwalk, Connecticut, recently traveled to Singapore and Malaysia for service learning and cultural study. In Johor Bahru, Malaysia, the Stellar International School opened their doors to the CGS students as well as a group of students from Guiyang Zhongtian Middle School of Guizhou, China.
The American and Chinese students came together for a week of collaborative academic activities highlighting Malaysian culture and heritage. Cooking and art sessions offered a deep dive into the cultural richness of Malaysia, fostering mutual respect and understanding. Students also explored the local areas to learn more about the cultural diversity of Malaysia, including local ethnic Chinese.
They also experienced the Chinese New Year celebration through many fun activities!
The CGS students engaged in service learning by helping the Chinese students improve their language skills. This support was done through conversations with Chinese students in English, collaborative classes and group activities.
Following this service learning and cultural exchange program, the CGS students had further exploration of Malaysia’s diverse cultures by visiting sites such as the Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur and Malacca.
